KARL WATSON'S
BIG MOUTH - HALF THE POINTS, HALF THE TABLE 25-8-08
Karl Watson
Although we are only two games into the new Premiership
season, it is clear to see a certain pattern is developing in
arguably the greatest club league in the world.
Chelsea have established themselves as firm favourites to take
the title away from Old Trafford, whilst Arsenal and Liverpool
may be once again fighting for third place.
As for the relegation battle, WBA and Wigan have made poor starts
which sends signals that it could be a very long season in store
for those two.
Despite it being early days, it is clear that some teams have
made bigger inroads than others.
Much of Gareth Southgate’s pre-season positivity was laughed
off by the media and neutrals. However, it is clear after only
two games that we have made a large amount of progress in such
a small space of time.
It would be easy for us to remind ourselves of our heartache
on Saturday. I do not believe I am the only one who thinks it
was not appropriate for Liverpool to be given four minutes to
get a winner and that Gary O’Neil was deliberately pushed in
the penalty area.
However, there were too many positives to take from our painful
loss and surely this will make us so much stronger for the season
ahead.
It all takes me back to when we were trounced 7-0 at Arsenal
a few years ago. The squad that took to the field that day consisted
mainly of youngsters. McClaren stated that the kids would learn
from it and despite the heartache and embarrassment, it would
turn them into better players.
Although it was a shame he didn’t say this in a continental
accent, we have to admit he was right.
Evidence of this followed at Fulham when we were able to field
the youngest squad in Premier League history. And it appears
that Southgate has managed to clear McClaren’s Pensioners of
yesteryear, replacing them with an astute squad of youngsters
which may just take this club to its next level.
I felt the squad gave the club and the town immense pride of
Saturday. Not only did we take the youngest side in this season’s
Premier League to Anfield but they also proved that they are
not going to be pushed over easily.
One thing we also have to remember is at this stage of the season,
it’s probably not what Gareth Southgate sees as his strongest
side.
I feel Gareth’s biggest job this season is more of a mental
issue than anything. Did our players mentally fold in time added
on?
Southgate regularly mentions the players lack of belief and
I feel this is clear to see.
The sheer lack of belief away from home is in contrast to the
arrogance at home against mediocre sides. These fixtures usually
end up with a defeat which on paper should never occur.
I felt the belief was clearly there against Spurs as a previous
side under Southgate would have shut up shop when Wheater bagged
our first goal of the season.
However, our mental abilities will be firmly tested against
Stoke on Saturday. They will be on a high but we have to make
sure we keep our feet on the ground. We have made a very solid
start to the season and if after three games we can have six
points, it will cement us as a side that may just make a push
into Europe this season.
However, how possible is this? As stated previously, it is clear
some sides have improved and some have not. I feel even on the
evidence of two games, it is clear to see who we can leap frog
in order to get into the top half.
Blackburn look a little bit vulnerable. If Santa Cruz is kept
quiet I don’t see where they can get their goals from and as
for defensively, despite having four points on the board at
this stage, they’ve conceded three goals and teams are finding
it easy to create chances. I understand that this could be said
for us but it’s in contrast to last season when Blackburn looked
solid both home and away.
Newcastle just look as boring as they did last season. If Kevin
Keegan thinks he’s got the best finisher in the world in Michael
Owen then he’s as mad as Mike Ashley thinking he can make a
profit on a club that’s gone nowhere since he bought it. Their
defence has not been improved and I just think we could go there
and get something – even off the evidence of two games.
West Ham are in danger of self-destruction. Selling their better
players to lesser clubs and having a manager in Alan Curbishley
whose ambition is on a par with an East Londoner's ploy to gain
employment in the next twelve months. I see them easily dropping
into the bottom half. It is inevitable that a period will be
instilled where Curbishley’s job will be in question, usually
mirrored by a number of poor results. We have to make sure that
during the transition of Curbishley out and whoever in, that
we take full advantage.
Manchester City will either hit the highs of the Manchester
Eye, or hit the depths of the Deansgate Canal. It will take
time for Mark Hughes to settle in but I generally do not see
where they have significantly improved. They have a good squad
of players, however many are aging and many are just mediocre.
Their away form last year was awful and a slight dip in their
home form will see clubs around them taking their top half place.
As for Tottenham, that’s anybody’s guess. Selling their best
players to their rivals is just instant suicide. Daniel Levy’s
days as chairman are surely numbered and they appear to have
brought in some players who may not gel Spurs into a good side,
just a side of good individuals.
Ramos has got his work cut out at this stage of the season.
They could have been excused for losing at the Riverside but
losing at home to a side that only won a few times away from
home last season is embarrassing. They are on the verge of another
poor start and in this League they could very easily once again
see themselves in the bottom half.
Surely these are the teams we will be fighting against this
season for a top half place? However in order to compete with
them we must start to dispose of the sides below us, which we
regularly fail to do.
Last season we dropped too many points home and away to sides
that were struggling and it is hard to say whether or not this
will occur again this season. Our opening games have come against
sides that we should not have any motivation issues with. However
Stoke will give us a very good indication as to how we will
perform against mediocrity.
Perhaps the game against Stoke will be our most difficult of
the current campaign and it may even be the most important.
It is this type of game that will provide an indication to our
finishing position. Good performances at Anfield quite simply
count for nothing if we cannot gain three points at home to
teams we ought to be beating.
Although I criticised Spurs for arrogantly expecting three points
against Boro on the opening day, we must make sure we do not
fall into this trap which we repeatedly do against mediocrity
at home.
However, it is not usual for Boro fans to be this expectant
after just two games.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
