KARL WATSON'S BIG MOUTH - SIZE MATTERS 8-9-08
Karl Watson

I don't recall a week in football quite like it - from the last minute drama of transfer deadline day to the shenanigans of directors of football and managerial resignations.

Yet all was quiet at the Riverside Stadium. I feel that this says a lot about the structure and principles of our club.

The situatuion at Newcastle is somewhat comical and it must reassure the fans of MFC that although our progress is perhaps a little slow, it's progress nonetheless.

It also further highlights the sheer quality of the club's infrastructure.

For years stretching back, the youth system at Middlesbrough Football Club has held huge significance. If MFC was a small business starting from scratch, it would be their main asset.

It therefore saddens me that teams like Manchester City prefer to go for the quick option of success by having money thrown at them by a billionaire tycoon (who I’m sure thought that there was only one team in Manchester).

With all this money, it is clear that players from their youth team will have little chance of stepping into the first team, despite the introduction of seven substitutes. I’m sure that with the added pressure now on Mark Hughes’ shoulders, he will elect to purchase a replacement player rather than select one from his reserves.

With the international teams taking centre stage this week, it has once again been highlighted that the introduction of foreign investors is not good for the English national squad.

My excitement over the English national football team extends no further than it does over the final of dull reality TV show Big Brother. This is because certain England players receive regular unjustified criticism due to their club side and general persona.

Stewart Downing is one such example.

Okay, he may not have graced the pitch in Barcelona on Saturday but I just knew he would stand out in the criticism stakes. My annoyance is enhanced because he has done very well to reach international level after coming through the ranks at Middlesbrough Football Club.

MFC will do everything possible to see their young players given a chance at Premiership level and they also encourage them to represent the club on the international stage.

Most of our young players will look to Downing as their role model and will hope to emulate his ability to play for the national squad.

Perhaps ‘fans’ of English football should be thankful that there are still clubs in the Premier League that have their young players' interests at heart, rather than just that of their cheque books.

This brings me on to our neighbours up the A19 as I believe what has gone on at St James' reinforces the excellent foundations we have at our own club.

This can be seen in the sheer number of managers who have failed at Newcastle. No matter who arrives, they simply do not have the backing or the capability to do well.

Coversely, statistics show that Steve Gibson is willing to give any manager a good amount of time to do things their way, despite what others think. Gareth Southgate would have been sacked long before last season's away trip to the Madjeski Stadium had he been working under any other chairman.

Also, is it coincidence that certain players do better at certain clubs? For example, there appears to be a jinx on players who play at Newcastle. They play poorly or get injured and when they decide to move on, they do well.

However, apart from the odd Lee Dong Gook or Massimo Maccarone, could we really say that our signings flop?

I don’t believe we can and it suggests that no matter which player we sign, our coaching and management staff have the ability to get the best out of our players.

Okay, our League performances and League positions do not suggest that this is the case but if we look at certain players, it is clear that as a club, we transformed their careers.

For example, Bolo Zenden was bought as a flop at Chelsea and was sold to Liverpool for a high price. He then went on to play in Champions League semi-finals.

Mark Viduka left with the reputation of a world class player, as did Yakubu.

Then there are the likes of Luke Young and Lee Cattermole who have left with the possibility of one day playing for England.

Not only this but we currently have players at the club who would be bought for £10million plus if they were to move on. Afonso Alves, Tuncay and Stewart Downing are three such examples.

This reinforces the fact that we are heading in the right direction and despite the increasing pressure of a top ten finish, it's pleasing to know that the club has the structure to deal with this.

I feel this can be further emphasised through our UEFA Cup exploits of a few years ago and I sincerely hope that Manchester City fail in this competition. Should this happen, it will again highlight the fact that our club is bigger than what it seems.

I often wonder what makes a big club. Newcastle may get 52,000 fans every week but surely their hierarchy and success on the field suggests that they are far from being a big club.

Perhaps sides such as Middlesbrough are doing more to obtain this success, as well as attempting to leave their mark on domestic and international football.

If Newcastle managers are coming and going in a matter of months and Middlesbrough managers are coming in and achieving success before departing, then surely this emphasises that despite the manager in charge, with the excellent structure that exists at MFC, we are heading in the right direction.

Can the same be said of our ‘illustrious’ neighbours? Let's make sure we are at the head of North East football this season.

Here's how it's done. Just follow these simple instructions.

1. Open an account with Sky Bet.

Open an account with Betfair. It is really important that you enter the promotional code of FTB125 when prompted. This is to ensure that you receive your bonus.

Place £25.00 on Manchester City at 3.1 (21/10) with Extrabet.

Extrabet match your first bet up to £25 so you will now have £50.00 riding on Manchester City.

The £25.00 matched bet will not show in your account but you can read all about how it works on the Extrabet site. It's the purple box that says '£25 FREE BET FOR NEW CUSTOMERS' on the top right hand side. Click here to visit the Extrabet site.

If you are unsure about placing these bets, please feel free to mail us or call us on 01642 223229 and we will talk you through it, no problem at all. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

You have temporarily laid out a total of £111.00 on the Manchester City v Arsenal match. I stress, temporarily... Now sit back, crack a beer open and enjoy the match.

4. Here's what happens at the end of the game. All winnings are paid out on the ninety minute result.

If Arsenal win, you collect £154.60. That's £129.60 from Sky Bet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair.

If it's a draw, you collect £156.86. That's £131.86 from Betfair plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair.

If Manchester City win you collect £155.00. That's £130.00 from Extrabet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair.

5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Manchester City v Arsenal match is Arsenal win and you make £43.60 profit. However, if Manchester City win you make £44.00 and if it's a draw win you make £45.86. That's a minimum profit of 39%, a much better rate of interest that you would get at any high street bank or building society.

6. It is absolutely vital that you click on the links on this page to open the accounts with the three bookies and enter the correct bonus codes or you may not qualify for the bonuses.

Also, before you place your bets, you should check that the odds haven't changed. If they have, let us know by mail or phone us on 01642 223229 and we will rework the bet for you.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
