KARL WATSON'S
BIG MOUTH - THE SAME BLUNDERS IN BLUNDERLAND 23-9-08
Karl Watson

Football is an emotional game and we all went through the rack on Saturday at the Stadium of Light.
As the Boro fans left their seats, turned off the television and switched off the radio, we were all probably getting a little bit too carried away with events.
However, maybe we should take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
I will admit that I was one of many fans who was holding Stewart Downing personally responsible for losing the game against Sunderland.
Although Downing’s penalty miss was certainly the turning point, surely if we had taken earlier chances, the penalty would have been a chance to extend a lead, not create one.
However our defeat all stems down to our mental vulnerabilities, which are clear to see.
First of all, it is clear that we mentally fold at crucial moments of the game. This means that if our future opponents have done their homework, they will surely grow more confident when we begin to lose faith as we spurn the chances we create.
However, I must admire Gareth Southgate’s reaction to our defeat. We have all seen other Premier League managers get very hot under the collar when confronted by a reporter after a painful defeat. On the contrary, Gareth reacts very well under these circumstances and was correct when he pointed out all the positives.
Downing has won us many games in the past. However, this spell cannot be doing his confidence very good, especially as there is a small portion of Boro fans who would prefer to see him leave. All of a sudden £12million looks a very good price for a player who struggles to perform.
I do not want to keep on going on about that penalty but some of our forwards (such as Alves) must be laughing when he sees a player so bereft of confidence from twelve yards that he has to put his foot through the ball and hope for the best. Any confident player would have placed the ball into the corner.
However there were many positives to take from the game which will surely stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. I thought Digard did well for the seventy five minutes he was on the pitch. Meanwhile, Adam Johnson had a good game and he must be in the manager's thoughts for a regular starting role.
However, although there are positives to take from the negatives, we do not want to find ourselves talking about this every away game. At five o’clock on Saturday we found ourselves in the familiar position of thirteenth with only six games in. The bottom half seems to be taking shape (apart from Manchester United) and it appears clear we are going to find it difficult to get out of it.
Although the performance for a good period of the game was very good, we will never get out of thirteenth without keeping a clean sheet. Conceding on average two goals a game on our away trips will see us collect minimal points away from home. And once some sides begin to find their scoring boots, our home record will be further affected.
The Carling Cup game against Manchester United represents a good opportunity to get some confidence back into the side away from home. Although it will be a tough game, I cannot see United starting many of their outstanding players and we should not be daunted by the prospect of going to the European Champions.
The game against West Brom may not be as simple as first thought. They have a very attacking attitude and although they do leak a few goals here and there, I can see us folding under any pressure they will place on us.
If the Sunderland game highlighted any concerns, it is the thinness of our squad. We have only got a few injuries at this stage and already it appears that draws away from home against mediocrity is the best we can hope for.
Tuncay is an integral part of our jigsaw and without him, we miss that piece of flair we need to become a good attacking side. Although the likes of O’Neil and Shawky are grafters, they do lack that little bit of flair that the likes of Arca and Downing add.
With Alves not really firing on all cylinders, we could have done with Mido being fully fit. We had the same problem with him last season. Starting off brightly, only for him to get a lengthy injury that had us relying on the likes of Dong-Gook Lee.
It’s an unfortunate matter that our treatment table holds the key to our season. If we can keep our squad fully fit then perhaps we can get away from that familiar spot of thirteenth.
I don’t really see where our season is heading at this stage of the season. Although Newcastle are in "turmoil" once again, we are only two points ahead of them. Before the game, Sunderland started one place above relegation and after ninety minutes of action, they had reached the heights of sixth.
Once again, I do not want to get to the stage where after one win against mediocrity we are going to finish in the top eight and after a loss we are destined for thirteenth. However, we can only judge our side on what we see and if we cannot score a goal against a side who finished below us last season then what does our season hold?
Defence is the best form of attack. So far this season we have looked like Brazil in stages and Derby County in others and once again it is the inconsistency that remains the thorn in our side.
Surely before we can dream of getting into the top half we have to address the fundamentals on the pitch, beginning with a solid back five. Without this, it will be another Jekyll and Hyde season, resulting in another thirteenth position with ‘positives’ to take.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
