KARL WATSON'S BIG MOUTH - THE TIME THAT YOU FEAR 5-1-09
Karl Watson

So with the turn of a new year came the time that most managers fear.

During January, they will get up earlier only to work later, they will constantly carry with them a hand towel to wipe their palms which continue to be covered with sweat, and they will go to bed every night thankful that a bid for their most valuable asset has yet to be processed.

Step forward Gareth Southgate.

The first month of 2009 is set to test Gareth Southgate like never before. He hopes this transfer window will go the way he would like it to. Middlesbrough have no intention to buy and little intention to sell. If only things were that simple.

With Stewart Downing set to leave the Riverside, he will leave his mark by giving his home town club double figures in money. This is money which Southgate must use to find a replacement, or a playmaker who can be as influential as Downing has been at his time at Boro.

Downing is halfway through his ninth season at Boro and is approaching his 200th game as a Boro player (in all competitions). It would be a great achievement for him to hit this landmark however it would mean him carrying on playing for Boro until the end of the current season.

No one can deny a player the right to be ambitious but I hope his words do not come back to haunt him.

An example would be Robbie Savage. Whilst playing at Birmingham, he declared his desire to move closer to his family. His move to Blackburn left him four miles further away from his family. It is not a massive figure but it was enough to leave him looking foolish.

Stewart Downing has reiterated his desire to play for a side that can contest for silverware. However, joining a side that has won little in the past decade and that is only a few points ahead of Middlesbrough in the table may leave a sour taste in the Boro fans' mouths.

Would a move away be the right option for Downing? London can be a harsh environment for a player who may be used to being settled. Jonathan Woodgate had his eyes firmly opened when looking for a place to live in the capital and this is coming from a player who lived in Madrid. His performances have not merited his leaving price.

Downing does need a fresh start but he needs to deliver soon. Although only being twenty-four, you get the impression that he is about to reach his peak in two years time.

However, he does need to score more than zero goals in twenty Premier League games. He has only scored twenty-three goals in all competitions for Boro and this type of form will not suffice at a team like Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur.

Although his statistics do not prove his worth to Middlesbrough, the remainder of Boro’s squad does. At this moment in time, he is irreplaceable. Even if Downing was to fetch £12million, could Gareth Southgate really lure a player of extreme talent to Boro? Probably not.

It would leave Southgate once again searching the European market for a player that has fantastic potential, yet no experience in arguably the best league in the world. And then there’s Afonso Alves.

Alves was bought a year ago in the January transfer market due to the correct departure of Jonathan Woodgate. But the buy was too rushed and it seems that the rest of Europe were correct in feeling he was overvalued.

Southgate cannot afford to be in this situation again. It left Boro going into the penultimate game of last season without being mathematically safe. This year it could be the last game.

The only hope for Middlesbrough is a breakdown between the two clubs – a situation not too dissimilar from the summer saga which was Gareth Barry.

Barry made no secret of his wishes to leave, as has Downing, but once Barry realised the move would not occur, he got his head down and concentrated on playing for Villa. Boro fans need a similar scenario.

If Downing was to be left on the shelf, although his confidence may take a bruising, it may give him the new lease of life that he is desperately crying out for.

The fact that the whole situation may be being distorted by the media does not help Southgate’s ambitions to keep the England International at the club. There has been little made of Southgate’s man management abilities but maybe Southgate can draw upon his own experiences to persuade Downing to stay.

Although the young will always be naïve, Downing does seem to have a very sensible head on young shoulders. No one can criticise him for wanting a move away, but when Middlesbrough have been one of the most successful sides outside of the top four, it does make you wonder whether or not Downing may be lured by the prospect of more money?

Perhaps things would have been so different if one result had been different last season. No one could have complained about a lack of ambition or success and maybe better players would have arrived in the summer.

What was the game? Cardiff City.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing these kind of bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers, which is highly unlikely.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these next season.
