LOSING IS STILL LOSING... 29-9-08
Udayan Mukherjee

When the same type of things happen in every game over a sustained period of time, it ceases to be okay. It ceases to be acceptable, although it does perhaps become understandable.
Losing is still losing, regardless of performance or effort. In many respects it becomes more difficult to stomach losing a number of games despite deserving to win.
Boro are young and naïve, but for goodness sake grow a pair! Learn to convert chances into goals, otherwise we will be in a massive rut and start to lose all confidence.
Column continues below...

I am tired of hearing Gareth Southgate's stock answer about "learning". This may be a young side, but you have to learn your lessons and learn them quickly. Instead, we have to put up with a shocking away record, late goals galore and a seeming unwillingness to learn from our mistakes.
Southgate is in severe danger of undoing his hard work by forcing the players to step up and man up.
It's difficult to put down an exact reason why we keep losing, but the problems should be sorted out during the week.
Too many match deciding factors are repeated with no real progress. It seems that we have a good team but are unable to grind out results that arguably our performances deserve.
Pre-season concerns surrounding problem positions have so far proved to be partially correct. While Brad Jones and in particular Ross Turnbull have performed above and beyond expectations, the pairings so far in central midfield have proved to be as much use as Anne Frank’s drumkit.
Somewhat bizarrely, the only player that has impressed me in the engine room has been Didier Digard (who, with his bald head and madcap beard, looks like Michael Eavis in a time warp). Yet he seems unable to hold down a first team place.
Digard looks to me like a very good acquisition and potentially an excellent defensive midfielder. Perhaps the trouble is going to be to find a partner for the Frenchman.
For me, both Shawky and O’Neil are decent players who are capable of doing a job, but alas incapable of really running a game.
There seems to be a lack of ability in front of goal amongst the central midfielders at our disposal. This is a real worry given the lack of form and confidence of Stewart Downing.
With regards to O’Neil, I am in two minds as to whether I like or dislike his inclusion in the side. For all of his obvious effort and will to win, there seems to be something lacking when he is playing as the most attacking central midfielder.
Afonso Alves plays predominantly either cutting in from the wing, or when he is on top form, on the shoulders of the last defender. With our current crop of central midfielders, I simply cannot see this happening.
Julio Arca has yet to come back from a bad injury and it remains to be seen whether he can be as influential as he once was. If he can, then his creativity will certainly be a boon to this Boro side.
The game away at Wigan is now pivotal in what is admittedly still a new season. We need certain players – the likes of Stewart Downing and Afonso Alves - to start to click back into gear and produce the type of form they are capable of.
They are the type of players who will raise Middlesbrough above their competitors in mid-table and start to get points on the board.
If they do not get their act together soon, then this habit of losing soft goals and losing winnable games will make us look over our shoulders rather than upwards and that will be simply unacceptable for a team with so much potential.
Up the Boro.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
