WARNOCK WEEKLY
- ELEGANCE AND PLAIN SAILING 27-8-08
Tom Warnock
So, three games into the season, mid-table in the league, into the hat for round three of the Carling Cup and eight goals scored. Not bad going all in all.
The feeling of optimism is able to continue.
Despite a gut wrenching and wholly undeserved defeat at Anfield, the crowd turned out en masse against Yeovil, managing to fill around 15,000 of the red plastic seats down at the Riverside.
However from where I was sat it appeared to be many more. The same applied for the Spurs game. I must either fail to have noticed 3,000 empty seats, or Steve Gibson crafts a very convincing dummy.
Regardless, it certainly makes for a better cup atmosphere when there’s a buzz building around the stadium.
Whether you were queuing outside at the last minute when you realised there was nothing on at the cinema, or you did manage to see Mido’s opener, it has been a while since we brushed aside a lower league team with such style and comfort. We tend to have a habit of starting nervously and scrapping for a desperate winner.
Not last night though.
Oh no, the young foreign acquisitions don’t know the meaning of ‘get stuck in’, they certainly don’t plan on getting stuck in any way at all. It’s all plain sailing and elegance in their eyes.
Gareth fielded a team full of Premiership and International experience, against a Yeovil team who was hurt by injuries. Although the more observant a fan would’ve been alerted to Yeovil's away draw at Leeds over the weekend.
In a refreshing change for these fixtures, we looked at ease with possession, one step ahead of the opposition’s players and with a clear idea about how the game was going to pan out.
I was most impressed by the performance from Mido, who is on some kind of one man mission to either get himself into the starting XI or to alert Wigan to his supreme talent and secure a one-year loan deal, one of which seems a highly bizarre ambition, I’ll let you decide which.
Mido was full of energy and played the longest he’d managed in a single game for many a month, without running out of fuel in the slightest. He was running the attack, bringing people into play and commanding two or three defenders at all times.
Many a fan had their eye on Marvin Emnes, looking to see if he could stake a claim for a starting berth.
He looked young and naive in his play at times, but he was never short of ambition and creative ideas. He has a tendency to want to flick the ball by his marker and turn onto his own flick, more times than not it seemed fruitless. However it seems when his team-mates become accustomed to his playing style, they will be able to provide him with the service to best compliment his play. He did take his goal in a composed fashion and this will no doubt be good for his confidence.
There was no need for the big boys, Alves and Tuncay sat out on the bench and Downing missed his first Boro game in a long, long time.
Next up is Stoke at home and Gareth faces a tricky dilemma picking a side.
Chances are he may go for the same personnel who started the opening two games. I can’t see him bringing in anyone new, unless he makes some alterations with the back four.
For me though, Hoyte didn’t do quite enough to dislodge Wheater or any of the other back four and prompt any re-shuffling.
It is not a convincing right hand side with respect to the defence. When playing Hoyte would only leave him with Aliadiere as cover, a decent winger could expose this pairing.
Our range of options up front leads me to say that goal scoring will never be a problem, especially against weaker sides. It is simply a case of converting the chances we create, because chances will always come.
If we are to pick up three points against Stoke, it will be a crying shame we could not have seen off the Scousers as well.
What a dream it would’ve been to have nine from nine.
Seeing us drop behind Newcastle and Sunderland was disappointing even at this early stage, as we seem to have made much more progress than both sides, although neither couldn’t really have got any worse without being relegation certainties.
We need a win vs. Stoke. Of course for the points, but also for the peace of mind, the reassurance – that we can put faith in a team who can produce a consistency of sorts, can we get a 100% home record going, make the Riverside our fortress, get the crowds back to maximum capacity and make teams fearful of coming here.
We have the firepower to potentially cause any number of teams problems, we just need to nail down that consistency. It is something which has evaded us for as long as many of us can remember, it would be nice to know what we are going to get for once – or would that take away all the fun?
Regardless, three points on Saturday is a must, let us bring
these new boys back down to earth with a thud.
Until next time,
Up the Boro.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
