WARNOCK WEEKLY
- THE CREAKING OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW 3-9-08
Tom Warnock
On Monday, the transfer window creaked shut after
remaining ajar for an extra day.
I guess this was because whilst footballers can play on a Sunday,
they seemingly aren’t able to stay up late and have to endure
the inconvenience of being flown up and down the country, escorted
from airports and be offered obscene amounts of moulah. Oh no,
save that for Monday.
Many words have been written on recent dealings so I won’t attempt
to further those discussions.
Nor shall I ponder the future of Kevin Keegan. The reason being
that I couldn’t really care much less about Newcastle United
if I tried.
I did, however, spend my Monday evening glued to Sky Sports
News, which for once made for fascinating viewing.
The number of hours of speculative transfer ‘news’ I endured
would be an embarrassment to admit.
However, I’m not half as socially deprived as those fully grown
men in replica shirts stood behind a Sky correspondent singing
songs about an overpaid Brazilian primadonna half my age at
12.30 in the morning.
I’ve never had a conversation with a Manchester City fan before
and after that sample, I’m going to ensure that I never do.
One thing that did catch my attention was the distinct lack
of any involvement in dealings down at the Riv.
I was just dying for some breaking news claiming that we’ve
placed an ambitious bid to secure the return of Dean Windass,
just in an attempt to raise our average squad age to forty-six
in one miraculous swoop.
On a serious note, all was quiet on Teesside and this was a
change from previous seasons. This indicated that maybe, just
maybe, Gareth is satisfied with what he currently has.
So I thought to myself, how happy should he be? How have our
key players, and indeed our new recruits, fared so far this
campaign?
Without doubt it has been our best start for many seasons. We
all know that football is a team game but it is also the performance
of individuals who will determine our fate.
In my opinion we have three core players, who if they all play
to the best of their abilities, will give us a solid base for
success.
Firstly, Stewart Downing. He has fast become
our biggest asset and holding on to him this summer has been
a huge boost. It’s a good thing other teams don’t quite appreciate
his qualities otherwise we may have seen him leaving for an
inflated sum.
In short, we haven’t seen the best of Stewy so far this season.
He was involved in the first goal against Spurs, with a reliable
ball into Alves, who did all he could with it before Wheats
finished it off.
Much of our play comes through Stewy but we do have other options
who have pace and can play wide, such as Aliadiere and Tuncay.
We know what we’re going to get with Stewy. He wasn’t at his
best against Stoke but then his contribution is all too often
measured by the rate at which his crosses convert to goals.
This is perhaps unfair on his game because he relies so heavily
on this end product.
The penalty miss was unfortunate but I’m not so sure he should
be on the penalties in the future. A Brazillian striker seems
a more sensible option as anyone within touching distance of
the England squad really can’t be all that great at spot kicks.
Downing’s contribution so far – 6.5/10.
So on to the aforementioned samba man as Afonso Alves
is our second key player. Claiming this week he wants to snatch
the European golden boot this season and not sounding like he’s
joking, only bodes well for the lad.
Confidence seems to be running through his veins and when you
can smack one in from thirty yards as he did versus Stoke, you
have every right to be so self-confident.
As with Downing, Alves hasn't quite found his swing yet. He
has been hesistant in goalscoring positions against both Spurs
and Stoke and he was relatively quiet at Anfield.
However his movement and ability to lose a defender is getting
him into goal-scoring areas and it's just a matter of time before
his finishing finds its ruthless edge once again.
Many have been calling for Mido to be in the starting line up
but could you really drop a player who has bagged fifty-two
goals in his last forty-eight league starts?
I’m looking forward to more from this guy. Much more in fact
as I tip him to score more than City’s Robinho and break some
records along the way.
Gareth, if you’re reading, don’t drop this lad! Alves’
contribution so far – 7/10.
Our final key player is a rapidly rising star and yes you guessed
it, he’s one of our own and a force in both penalty areas. He
is David Wheater.
The fact we sing his name from the terraces, and shirt after
shirt has his name and squad number emblazoned across its back,
is full testament to the youngster's growing stature.
I was shocked to see him being shunted to right back against
Spurs, as he has such a presence in the centre. Granted, it
seemed to work and the arrival of Hoyte means we won’t see it
again soon. He did a great job, he defended his lines, grabbed
a goal and dominated Spurs' strikeforce in the air.
The Liverpool game was a perfect example of how to defend for
the first eighty-five minutes whilst disregarding the last ten.
Wheater has played with elegance and continued his dominance
from last year. Not only can he win the ball in the air, his
control is good enough to bring the ball down and direct it
forward. He also leaves forwards having to play the ball on
the floor due to his command in ariel situations.
Having Gareth Southgate as a mentor, and indeed Colin Cooper,
will do wonders for his progress. This season is looking like
being a great one for young Wheats. Wheater’s
contribution so far – 9/10.
We haven’t had an extended chance to pass judgment on our new
arrivals thus far but from what we have seen of Didier
Digard, he seems to be a great spot by the Boro scouts.
He slots into the centre well and seems to have the energy to
track back when needed.
He also supports attacks, often managing to keep up with the
likes of Aliadiere and Tuncay.
He isn’t afraid to shoot, as we’ve seen in all his appearances.
He also produced a fine goal against Yeovil.
Many have compared him to Boateng and some even to Zinedine
Zidane. This is probably more by virtue of his shaven head and
French origin although he does have the swagger and aura of
a young Zidane. I like this quality in the French players, as
seen in Frank Queudrue, and currently in Aliadiere.
Didier really came into his own against Stoke and he’s growing
in confidence with every game. Digard’s contribution
so far – 7/10.
Finally, Marvin Emnes, the unknown quantity.
He is yet to make a league appearance but he must be chomping
at the bit.
I think it’s a good strategy by Gareth as he is allowing Marvin
to get a feel for the Premiership so he can prepare himself
mentally for what’s expected.
In the Yeovil game he was hit and miss in his ideas but he certainly
wasn’t afraid to take calculated risks going forward.
He has pace to burn and he was always asking for the ball. I’m
looking forward to seeing more from him and his appearances
to contribution ratio is high at present. This bodes well for
his prospects. Emnes contribution so far -
5/10.
An international break will be an ideal time for Gareth to rally
his young guns and to pick apart the tactics ahead of two difficult
away games.
Let’s just hope for no injury set backs during International
week and that we can get all the lads back together ready to
move forward in this new age of youth and optimism.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
