WARNOCK WEEKLY
- DEAD WEIGHT NOT SO GREAT 1-10-08
Tom Warnock

Frustration – noun
1. act of frustrating; state of being frustrated
2. an instance of being frustrated
3. something that frustrates, as an unresolved problem.
4. a feeling of dissatisfaction, often accompanied by anxiety or depression, resulting from unfulfilled needs or unresolved problems.
The pending definition yet to be inducted into the dictionary is as follows; 5. The emotion similar to that experienced by a fan or fans of Middlesbrough Football Club.
Saturday’s game was very much a re-run of our previous League defeats this season. A promising spell, lots of possession, chances galore and the same old outcome. At this point in the campaign, I’d say we are ninety percent of the way towards being an attractive, yet solid side.
Column continues below...

There would be less discontent on the terraces if we’d lost those 2-1s and 1-0s by three or four goals. It’s the fact that we’ve been within a whisker of victory which makes the inevitable defeat so frustrating.
Take Portsmouth for example – conceding ten goals in two matches, then coming back to win the next game. Losing 6-0 doesn’t mean you’re a bad team, it means you had a bad day at the office.
Repetitive losses by small margins make a bad team. It points towards deeper issues within the team and squad; of which there are many within the Middlesbrough side.
The positives from Saturday were there for all to see; there was no lack of goal-scoring opportunities, possession, or indeed attractive football.
However, it’s inside both boxes where we have our problems.
With the pace and abilities of the likes of Downing, Johnson, Aliadiere and Co, there’s no doubt we will create chances. We even scored against Manchester United whilst under a heap of pressure. So we all know that chances will come.
However, it’s apparent that our strikers are suffering from a drought and Afonso Alves in particular is going through a spell of low confidence. These chances should be bread and butter business for a finisher of his proven record. Let’s hope we don’t have another Dirk Kuyt on our hands, lethal in Holland, yet floundering in the bigger seas of the Premier League.
If you take a step back and examine the wider picture, our finishing is very poor. Even the goals we have managed to score aren’t anything to shout about – tap ins and bundles from Tuncay and Wheater, prods from Mido, and a free kick don’t exactly indicate top draw striking. The only real goal of quality was possibly Mido’s versus Pompey and the keeper should have saved that one.
My point is that Gareth Southgate should be extremely concerned. Our main outlet last season - Downing, with ten goals and numerous assists - isn’t performing and he is frequently becoming anonymous for long spells of games.
Alves brings nothing to the game other than finishing and when he’s not finishing, he’s not contributing. He’s dead weight; he obstructed the far superior Mido when a guilt-edged chance came his way.
At present, Mido is the strongest attacking force we have. On Saturday he was energetic, motivated, driving the attack, orchestrating shots out of nothing and setting up team-mates for efforts. As the game grew old we all knew a goal was never coming.
Justin Hoyte remarked in his post-match interview:
‘If we had played for two hours more we wouldn’t have scored, it was just one of those days.’
My worry is which ‘days’ was he referring to - any day Boro play probably. Thanks Justin for such a confidence inducing observation, or not. Let’s just hope it wasn’t an extract from Gareth’s warm down team talk.
I’m sure I’m not alone in the disbelief at the none inclusion of summer signing Marvin Emnes. Nothing was going our way and the game was ebbing away from us so what better time to introduce an unknown quantity with bags of pace to stretch the opposition’s weary legs and give them something new to worry about.
In truth, West Brom got lucky, they survived an onslaught. It was the perfect away day game plan, grab a goal and defend with all eleven men. We just didn’t have what it took to defeat the back line.
Frustration is in the air over Teesside and the season appears to be creeping away from us. The talk of the town is that it’s over before it’s begun. Let’s hope for a second coming, starting with a first away win of 2008.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
