THE NORTH EAST SUMMIT - SEASON PREVIEW 1-8-08
Stuart Young

The North-East Summit is back this season, with even more updates and information on all three North-East teams.

This weekly column will give Boro fans all the up-to-date news on their local rivals as all three teams compete to win the race to the North-East Summit.

Last season, Newcastle were narrowly crowned North-East Summit champions after Kevin Keegan guided the Magpies away from the relegation zone and more importantly away from Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

The bragging rights in the North-East this summer belonged to Newcastle but the Sunderland and Boro fans want those rights taken away this season.

The season is only a couple of weeks away and every football fan will be starting to get excited about the opening day.

Pre-season friendlies have been under way during the last few weeks, with new players training and playing with their new team mates as they prepare for the big kick-off.

Middlesbrough

Players out:
Unfortunately we saw Lee Dong Gook leave the Riverside this summer. I will certainly miss the high profile striker who scored lots of goals in his time with us.

On a serious note, we have seen a few great players leave Middlesbrough this summer. George Boateng (Hull), Mark Schwarzer (Fulham), Gaizka Mendieta (unattached) and Fabio Rochemback (Sporting Lisbon) have all left for new challenges. We wish them the best of luck.

Also, within the last couple of days, Boro has seen one of its home-grown talents move away from Teesside. Lee Cattermole has joined Wigan where he has been guaranteed first team football for next season.

Players in: With a number of players leaving, manager Gareth Southgate has needed to recruit in the right areas. The midfield was the most notable area which the Boro manager needed to pay attention to, hence he brought in Didier Digard from PSG and Marvin Emnes from Sparta Rotterdam.

Digard is a replacement for Boateng and has similar defensive attributes to the Dutchman. However, he is more comfortable on the ball.

Marvin Emnes has been brought into the squad because he has bags of pace and is technically very good. Both new signings are still very young; Emnes is 20 and Digard is 22. With the purchase of these youngsters it is clear that Southgate wants to build a team for the future at the Riverside.

Where will the goals come from? The main bulk of goals should come from Afonso Alves and Mido. The Brazilian showed us what he is capable of in the last few games of last season and will hit the ground running come the first game of this season.

Mido has been working hard on his fitness over the last couple of months and looks in great shape. If he stays fit then a great partnership between the two will surely form.

Downing will want to improve on his goal tally of ten last season and I'm sure Tuncay will be wanting more this season too.

Southgate's side will not struggle to score goals next season, unlike last season. Expect to see Alves in double figures by Christmas.

Players to watch: There are so many. The new boys, Digard and Emnes, look like super signings and will add class to the midfield.

I would keep an eye out for Alves and Mido up top too. Those two will be in devastating form next season.

Newcastle

The Magpies are current North-East Summit champions after narrowly beating Boro to the honours.

It took Kevin Keegan a while to get his players going after he was appointed last season. They were very close to the bottom three at one point but Keegan rallied his team and they eventually climbed up the League to safety.

This year, there seems to be less pressure on Keegan as expectations have been somewhat reduced. This is unlike previous years when the Newcastle board and fans demanded at least a European spot.

The new season could see another turbulent time at St James' Park for the fans whilst Keegan builds a team for the future.

Players out: The Turkish despair that is Emre Belozoglu has gone back home (Fenerbahce), Rozenhal has gone to Italy (Lazio) to seek fame and fortune and Peter Ramage has given up trying to play football and has joined QPR.

Players in: With players such as Emre and Rozenhal leaving St James' Park in the summer, it has been a tough ask for Keegan to bring in replacements.

Danny Guthrie (Liverpool) and Jonas Gutierrez (Mallorca) have joined the Keegan revolution.

Guthrie is a good youngster who can be moulded into a class act under the right guidance and Gutierrez is a quick winger who has good skill.

I'm sure Keegan will bring in more players before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Where will the goals come from? Michael Owen will provide the main threat of goals for the side next season, IF he stays fit.

Obafemi Martins will be missed if he is sold but as the season nears, it is more and more likely that he will stay. This is good news for Newcastle fans as he will provide a healthy return of goals.

Oh and Fat Head might chip in with a few goals if he stays fit too.

Players to watch: Danny Guthrie has been in fine form already for his new team in the pre-season friendlies. It could be a good year for the youngster in a black and white shirt.

The arrival of Argentinian Jonas Gutierrez will add flair and pace to Newcastle's attacking play.

Keep an eye out for Joey Barton's progress from a footballer to backstreet brawler - he might even play a game of football this season.

Sunderland

Roy Keane had a successful first season in the Premiership. His side avoided relegation and took a few points off their local rivals in the process.

Keane's next task is to make Sunderland a mid-table Premiership side.

So far this summer, Roy has not been as successful as he was last year at capturing players.

For some unknown reason he has tried to purchase the entire Tottenham reserve team before the new season kicks off. Very odd, but we don't wish them any luck for the new campaign.

Players out: Sunderland fans have said goodbye to Andrew Cole (Forest), Ian Harte (Wolves) and Stephen Wright (Coventry). They will all be missed as they have contributed so much to the Sunderland cause over the last year.

Players in: Keane has been a busy bee in his North London hotel room. He has managed to secure the services of glove wearing Pascal Chimbonda (Spurs), Teeny Tiny (Spurs), Steed Malbranque (Spurs), Spit (Bolton), Nick Colgan (Ipswich) and David Meyler (Cork City). All of which, you will agree, will transform Sunderland into a top-half of the table team...

Where will the goals come from? With Jones on the treatment table for a couple of months, it looks like the goals will come from Spit, Steed and Happy Chopra.

Players to watch: Steed Malbranque will bring energy and flair to the Sunderland line-up.

El Hadji Spit will be close to controversy as always, so keep an eye on him, even when he doesn't have the ball.

Kieran Richardson will be wanting to prove himself this season after a terrible spell last year. Expect him to perform in the big games.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
