THE NORTH EAST SUMMIT - BORO TAKE AN EARLY LEAD 20-8-08
Stuart Young
Southgate's team take an early lead in the race for the North-East Summit title.
One game down, thirty-seven to go!
Middlesbrough
It normally takes Boro three or four games to get going in a new
campaign but Saturday's win against Spurs surprised everyone in the Riverside
Stadium.
Even the Tottenham fans were stunned by the way the Middlesbrough players
tortured and tormented their team.
Gareth Southgate had to put into action a makeshift back four which were hardly
troubled throughout the game.
Southgate opted to start David Wheater at right
back, which he was not phased by at all. The Boro youngster rose to the challenge
and put in an excellent performance. His passing was superb and on
a number of occasions, he released Aliadiere and Tuncay down the right flank.
The goals arrived late on in the game with Middlesbrough fully deserving to score
on both occasions.
Wheater tapped in from close range after some excellent
play from Downing and Alves. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Spurs
team and with five minutes remaining, Mido deflected a Didier Digard shot past the
helpless Gomez in the Spurs goal to make it 2-0.
I was impressed with Boro's work-rate and also their attacking play.
However, I was very
disappointed to see them concede a very sloppy goal right at the death as a lack of
communication at the back caused Huth to head into his own net.
We must remember
that it was a makeshift back four with an inexperienced goalkeeper that started
the game on Saturday. It can only get better with the more games they play,
especially for Brad Jones in goal.
Boro travel to Liverpool on Saturday for a fascinating encounter against Rafa
Benitez's side.
How will Middlesbrough shape up against the Scousers?
I expect Southgate to make a couple of changes as Hoyte will come in
at right back and Pogatetz should replace Taylor at left back.
So, I'll go with
Jones in goal, Wheater and Huth as centre backs and Hoyte and Pogatetz at right and
left full back respectively.
Depending on how attacking Southgate wants his team to be, I think
he may go with the same midfield and attackers that started against Spurs. So,
Shawky and O'Neil in the middle with Downing and Aliadiere on the wings. Up top
will be Alves and Tuncay.
Prediction: Liverpool 1 Middlesbrough 1
Newcastle
Kevin Keegan's side started with a great performance against the current
Premiership champions. A 1-1 draw at Manchester United was a great start
for the Magpies.
Obafemi Martins scored a header for Newcastle mid-way through the first half to
give Newcastle a shock lead.
United were soon back on level terms
when Darren Fletcher guided the ball past Shay Given following good work from Ryan
Giggs on the left.
Newcastle played some good football against the reigning champions and could have
easily come away with all three points as United lacked invention in the final
third of the pitch. However, Shay Given was outstanding in goal for Newcastle and saved
some very good shots throughout the match.
Keegan will be more than happy with his side's performance at Old Trafford and will
be delighted with the point they deserved.
Bolton Wanderers are up next for Keegan's team. They will be hoping for a similar
performance at home to take all three points on Saturday.
How will Newcastle shape up against Bolton?
Keegan will probably go
with the same team that started against United last Sunday.
Given in goal, Beye
and N'Zogbia at full-back, the impressive pairing of Taylor and Coloccini at centre
back, Butt and Guthrie in centre midfield, Duff and Milner playing out wide with
Gutierrez and Martins leading the front line.
Prediction: Newcastle 2 Bolton Wanderers 1
Sunderland
Roy Keane's side didn't deserve to lose to Liverpool last Saturday
evening. Sunderland frustrated Benitez's team and looked good for a well deserved
point until Fernando Torres struck a blistering shot to take all three for
the Scousers.
Sunderland created some very good chances and could have taken the lead before
Torres's winner. Spit was very lively on his debut, creating a couple of good
chances and opened the Liverpool defence expertly on occasions.
Daryl Murphy had Sunderland's best chance of the game but his header from close
range was straight at the Liverpool goalkeeper.
Roy Keane should be very pleased with his team's performance but also disappointed
that his side conceded a goal from twenty-five yards.
Tottenham Hotspur are Sunderland's next opponents. Spurs will be wanting to get
their first points of the season in this game so I predict this one to be a tough
test for Keane's troops.
How will Sunderland shape up against Spurs?
Keane will probably go
with the same team that started against Liverpool last Saturday. Gordon in goal, a
back four of Chimbonda, Bardsley, Nosworthy and Collins. The midfield will consist
of Malbranque, Reid, Richardson and Tiny Tim with Spit and Murphy up front.
Prediction: Spurs 3 Sunderland 2
So, we are off! The race has begun and Middlesbrough have already taken a slight
lead ahead of Newcastle, with Sunderland in third place. Long may this continue!!

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
