THE WEEK ON THE TEES - THE AMBASSADOR'S RECEPTION 20-8-08
Luke Raine

Well what a start to the season for Boro fans. A full house, a couple of goals and an energetic performance from a young side. And even the sun was shining.

Boro fans are too down to earth after previous disappointments to get carried away after one performance but the signs were so encouraging that it was hard not to be.

David Wheater excelled out of position, probably gaining the man of the match award ahead of Tuncay because of this. Wheater looked like he had played right back his whole life and that is testament to his determination and ability.

Admittedly, the team did catch Tottenham on a good day. Maybe a few months down the line, once their players have gelled, they will be a different proposition. Even then, though, they certainly won't be a top four proposition.

Manchester United were the odd ones out of the quartet as they dropped two points at home to our friends on Tyneside. Newcastle did put in a good performance but they also caught their opponents at a good time, with the home side missing a number of key players.

What I don’t understand is all the fans and pundits jumping on the Chelsea bandwagon. Okay, they played well at home to Portsmouth, but didn’t United do that and more to teams last season?

Chelsea have been over-hyped in my opinion and once United have their full compliment back (plus the imminent arrival of Dimitar (the sulk) Berbatov), they will be producing performances that will eclipse what Chelsea did on Sunday.

The most impressive thing about the Stamford Bridge outfit was their new signing, Deco, who ran the show from a variety of positions. At the same time, however, it made me wonder how such a small, technical player would fare during away games during the winter months. It will be interesting.

It will be even more interesting if he becomes the fulcrum of Chelsea’s team and they start relying on him like United do with Ronaldo. None of Manchester United’s new players are new to this country and that could be in their favour come the crunch in May.

Yesterday saw the announcement of the “new” England captain as John Terry. It is clearly a ploy from Fabio Capello to keep the press thinking, as this isn’t the first time he has sprung a surprise.

All the signs pointed to Rio Ferdinand being named captain but I feel that Capello wants to be in control of the press, not the other way round, as has been the case during previous regimes.

As for the choice, I don’t think that it is the right one for a number of reasons.

Firstly, Terry led the team during an unsuccessful qualification campaign. Therefore, maybe a fresh start was needed, not only for Terry but for the other players too.

Secondly, from what I have read, I think Ferdinand would be a better ambassador off the pitch than Terry. He is known to have undertaken charity work on a number of occasions and hasn’t been pictured parking his Bentley in disabled parking bays recently.

It would take a big man to argue with Capello and maybe the captaincy isn’t such a big deal. In reality, if England qualify for the World Cup in two years time and go on to the semi-finals and beyond, no one will give a jot.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing these kind of bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers, which is highly unlikely.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these next season.
