THE MIGHTY BAZ
Denis Barry

IRONING OUT THE AWAY DAY BLUES 15-8-09
NEW EXPECTATIONS, NEW NAMES, OLD FAILINGS 10-8-09

Denis is a recently retired lecturer/project manager at the University of Huddersfield.

He has supported Boro since 1957 after watching his idol Cloughie score goals for fun, especially one in August 1958. It was the opening day of the season when he bagged five against Brighton Hove Albion. The Boro won 9-0, which is still a record score for an opening day match.

Denis was born near Ayresome Park, in Archibold Street, the street next to where Don Revie was born.

He was brought up in Berwick Hills. Geoff Butler lived around the corner and as a kid, he had the pleasure of having a good 'kickabout' with him and the late Cyril Knowles.

He has been a season ticket holder since 1995 in the lower West Stand where he sits with his mates, all from the Boro but none of whom now live there. All are Boro ex-pats.

Denis says that this adds something extra to the support you give the club because it takes more effort and motivation to travel to see your team.

On this season, Denis says:

"As an ex-pat, I feel more aggrieved when the team plays poorly at home, fails to score and shows little effort. That happened too often last season.

"I think the Boro are at a crossroads whereby the next two months will dictate their fate.

"I blame Steve Gibson for presiding over our relegation. I am bitterly disappointed with Gareth Southgate, who has failed as a manager, and I thought he would have tendered his resignation by now.

"Despite this, I support the team and the club, and I am loyal. My morale is not high for this season but I am an optimist and hope we will be successful. I am trying to keep disillusionment and cynicism at bay."
