I have lived in Middlesbrough since the summer of 1975 and worked as an Experimental Assistant in the Research and Development Department of ICI, Wilton, until 1990.

From April 1991 until May 2002 I helped run the family curry house 'Cleveland Tandoori' on Linthrope Road.

The first generation of immigrants from the Indian sub-continent were unique. They were young men who had come to work for only a short period (say five years), make a fortune, and return home. They brought their families from back home, spent their life working but mentally, they were always in India.

However, their children who were born in Britain saw themselves as British. My generation, who came between the ages of eight to 12, had limited experience of the British education system and had some memories of the land of our birth, which was enhanced by some of the older generation.

I now regard Middlesbrough as my home town. I cannot recall exactly when this identity crisis was resolved. I've always been interested in the history of Middlesbrough.

Apart from the history of Middlesbrough, my other passion is cricket and I have never considered myself a football person. Living in Middlesbrough, I am aware of the football team and understand the impact it has had on the town, the publicity it has provided for the town and how much it has enhanced the town's reputation.

However, I have always watched the important Boro games on telly, like cup finals. I also glanced at the Boro results and even have couple of Boro shirts but I would still not consider myself a football fan.

That was until last season. I could not help but sucked into the emotional turmoil; thus I regard myself as an Accidental Supporter.

It was an experience for me as a poet/writer with limited knowledge of any football to try and write about Middlesbrough F.C. but I hope the fans enjoy my work.
