THE ComeOnBoro.com 888 PACIFIC POKER TOURNAMENT

The very first ComeOnBoro.com 888 Pacific Poker tournament was played out on Thursday 22nd September 2005.

The event was not publicised in a big way. Only those who had previously expressed an interest were communicated to and you could say that our powerful publicity machine was rested for this one.

There were two reasons for taking this route. Firstly, our new sponsorship deal with 888 Pacific Poker is very new. About as new as it could possibly be in fact. We wanted to put it to the test first. These things can and do go wrong and I would not have enjoyed fielding thirty or fourty emails asking why things hadn't happened as they should have done.

Secondly, we wanted to have first hand experience of how the whole thing worked so that when there are a reasonable number of players, it won't be a problem to provide our usual standard of customer care.

I am pleased to say that now that the system has been put into operation and used for real, the above two items are not a concern anymore.

888.com have done everything that they said they would do and the ComeOnBoro.com private cardroom was superb.

I now feel that we are ready to take this to the next level and we will do so for the next tournament which will take place in just a few days time.

But enough of that. "What about the game?" I hear you ask...

Four players participated. Six players originally registered but LEZALE was unfortunate in not having his registration details confirmed until one minute before kick off due to outside issues. MADBRAD3 had local internet problems and also didn't quite manage to join the inaugural tournament but watch out players! Both will be back next time...

In fact LEZALE could be counting his blessings later tonight. Incensed that he just missed the ComeOnBoro.com tournament, he joined the table for the evening's big one and as I write, is currently playing the $15000 tournament instead. I hope he wins it!

GETSMART arrived in time in a limousine, booted, suited and ready to rock. MIUPOKER, SMOKE77 and SG036 were there and GETSMART didn't mess about as he went for the jugular from the first hand.

I have to say at this stage that the action is fast on this table. I'm more used to the first ten hands taking an hour or so as wine breaks, cigarette breaks, three course meal breaks and long conversations break out amongst players who haven't enjoyed each other's company for a week.

But there was none of that in here. You don't even get time to slowly show your winning hand in a 'run it in- build the tension' kind of way.

GETSMART wasn't bothered though, even though his luck wasn't quite there in the early stages.

An over confident SG036 was suckered into a $1000 bet with a pair showing and promptly dropped to around the $300 mark.

MIUPOKER was playing too cagey for his own good and didn't collect the size of pot that he should have won when lady luck dealt him pocket pairs.

Fifty minutes in, just five minutes before the half time break and GETSMART was already the clear leader with almost $4000 in the bag. SMOKE77 was second with around $1500 and SG036 and MIU POKER were just hanging in there for the half time oranges with around $400 each.

GETSMART raises on the flop and MIUPOKER and SG036 go all in after him and are beaten when GETSMART adds the third nine to the pair already showing...

And then there were two...

GETSMART must have been supping of Steve Round's Isotonic pick-me-ups at half time as he came out storming.

With six minutes of the second half gone, he had reduced SMOKE77 to just over a hundred and then took the next hand for a fifty and SMOKE77 was down to just under $70 with GETSMART sitting on a pile worth almost five grand.

SMOKE77 was not out to be beaten tonight though and with a do-or-die attitude that we could do with seeing more of at The Riverside these days, he attacked GETSMART and after a few rounds of Texas FOLD 'Em, SMOKE77 was right back in the frame with a grand's worth of chips in front of him.

But he didn't manage to keep it going and GETSMART wiped him out in the next three hands. It was sheer chip weight that made SMOKE77 buckle and after one hour and fifteen minutes of the tournamanet, GETSMART was declared as the very first ComeOnBoro.com 888 PACIFIC POKER Champion.

He thoroughly deserved the win and will hopefully be back for the next tournament to defend his title.

This is going to hot up in a very nice way. It was a lovely beginning to what should become something of an institution and the stakes are already up for the next tournament.

LEZALE didn't manage to pull off the $15000 that he was playing for in the evening's other tournament but he did end up finishing in the top 10% of 800 players.

So GETSMART could have some serious competition next time round. But probably not from SG036 or MIUPOKER...

GETSMART: I enjoyed it and with a few more players it would be even better, if you fancy this get on the next one, there is a chat board and we have a bit of crack. It cost $5 for 1 hour and 15 mins entertainment. I enjoyed that game more than when I won $800 last week 'cos I am the first ever winner> Fame at last. Stevie tried to bust me in the first few hands which I am sure he would never have let me live down. Hard luck Stevie, EXPERIENCE IS EXPENSIVE.
