The first-ever Middlesbrough Open Online Poker Tournament was played out on Thursday 1st November 2007. That the tournament ever happened at all is a minor miracle as unexpected problems delayed the start and brought about a venue change just after the official start time.
As well as this being the first ever Middlesbrough Open, it was also the very first time that Mansion had hosted a private scheduled tournament. We are fully confident that the problems that were experienced this time around will be ironed out in good time for the next tournament.
The excitement had been building all day long but when the tournament finally got underway, an hour and twenty minutes after the scheduled time, player leakage meant the field was down to two tables of five.
Play on table two was fast and frantic with some early all-in calls and a big win each for rochey1986 and OrmesbySmog. This sent them into the top three of the leaderboard.
Over on table one, borolad1989 and BoroTommo were stacking early and after thirty minutes, the leaderboard read like this:
borolad1989 3200
BoroTommo 2800
OrmesbySmog 2350
Anybody4aBeer 1900
boro94 1810
But it didn't stay that way for long as first SteveG3666, then OrmesbySmog and then Anybody4aBeer took pots worth over 1000. Within five minutes the leaderboard had changed:
OrmesbySmog 3425
SteveG3666 3275
Anybody4aBeer 3150
borolad1989 2700
BoroTommo 2600
The first hour of the tournament was unlimited re-buys but apart from the optional re-buy at the end of the first hour, there was only one re-buy executed and that was by SteveG3666.
And it was SteveG3666 who was also involved in the one and only casualty of the first hour when he knocked out rochey1986 and became chip leader with 3575.
But the lead was short-lived as OrmesbySmog took the biggest pot of the night when he dropped an ace on the river to make three and scoop a massive 3025 chips.
At the end of the first hour, the leaderboard looked like this:
OrmesbySmog 7400
BoroTommo 4550
SteveG3666 3975
Anybody4aBeer 3325
borolad1989 2850
The second hour started with a vengeance as players battled for a seat on the final table. From the off a far more aggressive game was played than the one that was witnessed in the first hour.
Players fell quickly and it was only twelve minutes in to the second hour that the final table was decided. And all final tableists were from Middlesbrough. The title would be staying in the town.
Anybody4aBeer 6750
OrmesbySmog 6200
BoroTommo 4175
SteveG3666 2250
boro94 1625
Seven minutes into the final table, the field was reduced to four as some disastrous play from SteveG3666 resulted in serious shrinkage and elimination when all-in chasing a straight that never materialised. Anybody4aBeer moved to the top of the leaderboard for the first time:
Anybody4aBeer 8400
OrmesbySmog 6500
BoroTommo 3175
boro94 2775
The final four became a final three at 23:06, just after OrmesbySmog had re-taken the lead. BoroTommo was left cursing his luck after the baddest beat of the night sent him crashing out. boro94 drew a ten on the river, the one and only card that could have stopped BoroTommo getting back into the match, but it wasn't to be this time round.
The final three started like this:
OrmesbySmog 9250
Anybody4aBeer 7550
boro94 3400
At 23:11, boro94 bluffed his way back from almost certain elimination after being reduced to 400 chips. It was a case of nothing to lose as some outrageous bets were made. All of them paid off handsomely and at 23:12, boro94 was level chip leader with OrmesbySmog on 9350. Anybody4aBeer was on 5400.
At 23:14, another massive gamble from boro94 paid off again and made him the new chip leader:
boro94 11200
Anybody4aBeer 4650
ORMS 3050
boro94 was not letting up at all and OrmesbySmog was made short work of after a pre-flop all in. boro94 saw it with a 9 - 4 and remarkably won the hand. And then there were two...
boro94 11700
Anybody4aBeer 9300
There then followed six minutes of high quality Tournament Final action as both players went for the title with gusto. It was a blood and thunder contest with massive stakes being played and amazingly, as the blinds hit 300/600, both players were neck and neck on 10500 each.
And then at 23:21 boro94 made his play for the title with a mighty all-in on pocket fives. A third five was on the table. Anybody4aBeer called the all-in and produced the fourth five and when a jack appeared on the river, the full-house got the champagne corks popping.
Anybody4aBeer is the first Midlesbrough Open Online Poker Tournament Champion and a very worthy Champion at that. Keep checking these pages for news on when Anybody4aBeer will be making the first defence of his title.
