ENGLAND v CROATIA - McCLAREN SACKED, MOURINHO FAVOURITE
The Football Association have terminated the contract of England coach Steve McClaren. His 15-month tenure was brought to an end on Thursday morning, less than 12 hours after his team were knocked out of Euro 2008 at the qualifying stage after losing at home to Croatia.
England, who only needed a draw against Croatia to seal their place at the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, lost 3-2 at Wembley.
McClaren was contracted up to the World Cup in 2010 - but he will not be seeing out the remaining 33 months of his deal after England's first failure to qualify for the finals of a major tournament since 1994.
His reign is the shortest in the history of the English national team.
The FA also confirmed that the contract of McClaren's assistant Terry Venables has also been terminated.
William Hill have been forced to slash their odds for Jose Mourinho to become the next permanent England manager after an overnight gamble.
"Jose was the only man anyone wanted to back after the match - overnight and into Thursday over 80% of the bets we've taken have been for the former Chelsea boss," said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
William Hill have now made Mourinho 4/1 favourite to get the job - having quoted him at 10/1 when he left Chelsea and 11/2 prior to the England-Croatia match.
