MIDDLESBROUGH 0-0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - FIRST HALF REPORT
Barclays Premier League, The Riverside Stadium, Saturday 16th August 2008
Andy Morgan

New signings Didier Digard and Marvin Emnes could only make the bench as Gareth Southgate decided to go with the longer-serving members of the squad for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

The speculation over who would be Boro's first choice keeper was answered when Southgate placed Australian Brad Jones in goal, despite the fans rooting for Ross Turnbull.

In the absence of Luke Young after his high-profile move to Aston Villa, David Wheater played on the right. Robert Huth and Emmanuel Pogatetz were in the centre, whilst Andrew Taylor on the left.

A rare appearance for Mohammed Shawky graced the midfield whilst Jeremie Aliadiere was pushed further back from his usual striker's position. Gary O'Neil and Stewart Downing made up the quartet whilst Afonso Alves and Tuncay Sanli were up front.

Spurs notable absence was the Manchester United bound Dimitar Berbatov whilst the notable inclusion was Jonathan Woodgate, who was to play against his hometown club.

THE FIRST HALF

Boro started brightly and won their first corner within their first two minutes. However the ball drifted behind the by-line as it was delivered and the chance was wasted.

The first shot of the game came through new-boy David Bentley, who blasted a shot slightly wide of the right hand post. A dubious corner was given, which the Boro comfortably cleared.

Spurs won their second corner in the eighth minute, which Jones punched clear. The ball fell to Giovanni dos Santos whose shot went woefully wide.

A good break from Tuncay teed up Downing whose cross was only partially cleared by former Boro favourite Johnathan Woodgate. The ball broke to Alves but he hit his shot wide.

On fourteen, the ball fell lucky for dos Santos who drilled the ball to Bentley. As he darted in from the left hand side, he flashed a shot narrowly wide of Jones' post from twenty-five yards out.

From a Spurs corner, Tuncay picked up the ball after David Wheater dinked the ball over the stagnant Spurs defence. The Turk ran into space before selflessly squaring the ball to Alves. The Brazilian should have scored but Spurs' left-back, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, recovered just enough to put him off as he pulled the trigger from twelve yards.

On twenty-four Downing took advantage of some poor Spurs defending to win the ball. He passed to Shawky who surprisingly tried a shot from thirty yards, which unsurprisingly failed to reach its target. Obviously he was trying to be the club's new Rochemback.

On thirty Spurs nearly took advantage of the confusion between Jones and Wheater after a vicious ball from the right caused all sorts of problems. The defender eventually managed to clear it for a corner, from which Spurs could not profit.

From the break, Aliadiere checked back when he should have galloped into the Tottenham outback. He passed to Downing, who in turn passed to Alves, who had his shot cleared by the Spurs defence.

Boro thought they had scored from the corner but referee Martin Atkinson ruled it out. Michael Dawson was pulling Wheater's shirt but this didn't stop him from breaking free and putting the ball in the back of the net. For some reason, Wheater was penalised for that and his effort did not stand.

This injustice roused Boro and a terrific pull-back from Aliadiere set up Alves. He whipped a shot just over the bar but he should have really worked the keeper from that distance.

An exhilerating piece of skill from Tuncay allowed him to play in Aliadiere. His ball won the Boro a corner but Wheater's delivery was poorer than a Daily Express paper round and the crowd groaned their disapproval.

It was rapidly becoming a game of corners after a Spurs attack rebounded of Wheater's shins and out for a dead play. Simulatenously, Pogatetz started the way he meant to go on and had to leave the pitch due to rivers of blood streaming from his eye.

A Pogatetz clearance on forty-two allowed Tuncay to demonstrate some great play by darting up the pitch. He passed the ball to Alves once more who had to take an extra touch. This allowed the Spurs defence in and they conceded a corner. This was rather disappointing from Boro's perspective.

The final move of the half saw a fantastic crossfield ball from Downing tee up Tuncay but nothing developed from such a promising delivery. Still, the Boro were looking scintillating in attack - all they needed was Alves to provide the cutting edge.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
