The smoke from 'Black Sunday' is only just starting to clear and judging by the angst and vitriol directed at the club in the aftermath of the FA Cup horror show, it appears that many supporters have cut their cloth accordingly and are re-investing only a level of emotional involvement to match the commitment displayed by the players on 'Black Sunday'.

If you are still in mourning, you may have forgotten that we are playing tonight, away at Aston Villa in the Premier League. This match will go a long way towards determining the level of damage from 'Black Sunday'. We will know after tonight whether or not the team are going to display the Teesside Steel that will be essential if we are to avoid relegation.

The future of Boro is unclear at present but I am certain that Mr Gibson knows full well that the consequences of Sunday's defeat have the potential to be devastating. It is clear that sweeping changes are required in the aftermath of 'Black Sunday' and the Chairman will have taken this defeat harder than anyone.

There is some hope that we will actually win tonight's game but the over-riding feeling is that it is more likely to herald the beginning of the end of an era. If this current Boro team fail to drown those expectations, it may be too difficult to halt the downward spiral. Victory is essential tonight but by no means guaranteed. Relegation does not bear thinking about...
