MIDDLESBROUGH 0 WEST HAM 1 - FIRST HALF REPORT
Andy Morgan
Boro were looking for their first back-to-back wins of the season and Gareth Southgate opted to do it with an unchanged line-up from the side that beat Manchester City on Wednesday evening.
This meant that Chris Riggott and Emanuel Pogatetz featured in the centre of defence, with David Wheater on the right and Andrew Taylor on the left.
Jeremie Aliadiere was on the right hand side of midfield, with Stewart Downing on the left. Didier Digard started his third match on the bounce, partnering Gary O'Neil who will be on a high after scoring his first goal for the Boro against City.
Tuncay and Afonso Alves featured up front.

THE FIRST HALF
Boro started brightly against a West Ham side who were demoralised after four straight defeats. It was felt that an early goal would reinvigorate the demons in the Hammers and Jeremie Aliadiere darted forward trying to snatch it. In the end, he just snatched the side netting.
The first corner of the game came in the third minute as the Boro were pressing West Ham's full backs. The left-footed delivery towards Aliadiere was wasted though, as the Frenchman blasted wide.
A slip by Pogatetz in the sixth minute allowed Freddie Sears in but his shot was woeful and was met by the jeers of the masses. This allowed the Boro to break through Downing and he almost fed Tuncay but the cross wasn't quite accurate enough.
On nine, Alves tried the backheel on the halfway line but all he did was give the ball to Sears, making the Brazilian look silly in the process. The Hammers frontman darted forward and space opened up for him but his shot went wide.
Two minutes later, excellent play from Riggott denied Sears once more. Julien Faubert darted forward and launched a peach into the middle of the box. He then launched the ball and had Riggott not intervened, things could have become very sticky for the Boro.
West Ham weren't really threatening the Boro as they were overplaying it in midfield. Meanwhile, the home side were pressing forward but they weren't keeping the ball as well as they would like and this was impeding their progress.
Then the Hammers got their act together and from it, they scored. Pogatetz couldn't control a high ball and it found its way to Luis Boa Morte. He dinked it in to Hayden Mullins who fluffed a left-footed shot. However, where he failed with his left, he succeeded with his right and he blasted another shot that took a deflection, hit the underside of the bar and dropped into the back of the net. First blood, West Ham. The Boro had gifted them a goal - and confidence too.
MIDDLESBROUGH 0 WEST HAM 1 (Mullins, 21)
Sears and Craig Bellamy were interchanging well and this was stretching the Boro backline. The former passed to the latter and Bellamy invited the challenge, which Riggott duly provided. A free-kick in a dangerous position was awarded and Bellamy teed up James Collins. He blasted a shot that went a couple of inches wide of the right hand post. The wall was more useless than Kerry Katona's bank manager.
The visitors were far brighter than the Boro and their pace was causing the home side a whole host of problems. In fact, the home side were creating nothing whereas the Hammers were threatening scoring a second.
A good block from Taylor denied the Hammers after the ball fell to Collins. It was concerning how easily they were cutting through the home side and this was something that Gareth Southgate was saying from the touchline.
A David Wheater header denied Collins a similar opportunity on goal. Nothing came from the corner but surely it was only a matter of time before the Hammers would double their advantage.
On thirty-four West Ham mounted a strong attack involving three players. Bellamy was popping up everywhere and almost scored with a tap-in. Thankfully, the offside flag saved the Boro.
The crowd were being tremendously helpful by showing their frustration at the rank awful display that the home side were serving them. The Boro were over-complicating things in midfield and this was allowing the Hammers to make easy tackles, breaking the home side's moves down.
At the other end, Sears set up Mullins on forty-two and he launched a shot that went high and wide. Pogatetz did enough to put him off but the ominous signs were still there.
The Boro were less bright than Jade Goody whereas West Ham were sharper than Jonathan Ross's suits (but not his wit).
Boro's first move came through Digard. He targeted O'Neil who passed to Aliadiere. He dinked it into Alves but it was slightly behind him, so he couldn't get full power on his shot. Robert Green (yes, he is in the Hammers' goal and this IS the first time I've mentioned his name during this match report) easily made the save.
Going into stoppage time, O'Neil had a free kick that was floated towards Chris Riggott but he couldn't connect to it. Thirty seconds later, a Downing ball in from the right was flapped at by Green but he denied Alves the opportunity to pounce on it.
A succession of corners ensued after Boro (and Aliadiere in particular) were guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net. The final shot came from Digard, whose shot went nearer to the corner flag than the goal.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that
question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing these kind of bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from
following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our
advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers, which is highly unlikely.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to
claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these next season.
