It's now four matches without defeat for Middlesbrough which, for a side as inconsistent as they are, is a definite improvement.

The Riverside outfit simply aren't a team to trust from a punting point of view - especially in home matches like this which they are expected to win - and the departure of Jonathan Woodgate this week and the continued speculation over Stewart Downing can't exactly have boosted morale.

Boro have won just two matches at home this season yet one of those was a magnificent display against Arsenal which underlines all we've said so far.

The signals are just as mixed over Wigan though - they've definitely improved under Steve Bruce and should relish getting away from the desperate surface at the JJB but just one win out of 12 on their travels means it's a leap of faith to back them.

That victory did come last time out - albeit at Derby - and they are now unbeaten in four away from home so they might be worth chancing in the draw no bet market at a general 2/1.

However the best punting angle on this game - as it has been for much of the season when Boro are involved - is backing giant defender David Wheater to score first.

He's opened the scoring in three of Boro's Premier matches this season - more than any other player in the side - and no wonder because he's a huge threat at set-pieces.

He's still available at 25/1 in places to score first, though not with firms who offer each-way terms so we'll split stakes with William Hill 8/1 anytime quote.

Verdict: Middlesbrough 2 Wigan 2
