A REF'S EYE VIEW OF PREMIERSHIP OPENING DAY 21-8-06
Graham Frankland

The Premier League is back and with it the usual array of contreversial decisions given/not given by match officials. Here is a summary of big decisions that caused a stir.

Arsenal v Aston Villa

No major incidents to report.

Bolton v Tottenham

Bolton's first goal created a talking point as Calum Davenport was being held by Bolton's new signing Meite, who in turn was being held by a Spurs defender as big donkey Davies powered in Bolton's first from a corner.

A lot was made of the fact that Davenport was being held which prevented him from challenging Davies but nothing mentioned about the fact that Meite was being held by the Spurs player. From a ref's point of view one would cancel out the other so play on......... fuck em I say!

Chelsea v Manchester City

A routine Chelsea win, but wtf was Essien doing pulling Corradi up off the deck by his hair? In my eyes that constitutes violent conduct and he should have been dismissed as well as Corradi. He will get away with this as he did receive a yellow and therefore the ref has seen the incident so no further action will ensue. Weak refereeing in my view.

Everton v Watford

A game of two penalty decisions. One given to Everton and one appeal from Watford turned away. Both incidents were very similar in that they involved a defender sliding into a challenge with his arms raised.

The Everton defender clearly handled the ball but no penalty was given whereas the Watford defender was struck in the face by the ball and to his amazement the penalty was awarded. The referee will be pretty embarrassed when he sees a replay of these incidents because he got both of them completely wrong, much to the dismay of Watford.

Manchester United v Fulham

Did not see any of this game but seems to have gone off without incident, apart from Fulham and French Franck taking a pounding.

Newcastle United v Wigan

No controversies reported.

Portsmouth v Blackburn

A highly controversial game with two Blackburn players being dismissed. Lucas Neill should have no complaints about his two yellow cards but Andy Todd was very unfortunate to receive his marching orders after a perfectly timed challenge on Kanu. I suspect that one will be rescinded on appeal.

A strange incident occurred in this game when a Portsmouth player, virtually on his own goal line dived on top of the ball to prevent an opponent knocking it into the net and he got a free kick for his troubles... unbelievably. The correct decision would have been to give a drop ball on the six yard line but the ref took the easy way out on this one.

Reading v Middlesbrough

Clearly this should have ended 3-3 as Viduka's "goal" was onside. These decisions are the domain of the assistant who on this occasion got it wrong, sadly for us. It is a difficult task with these tight calls but hopefully we will get one back in the near future.

Sheffield United v Liverpool

Sky have looked at the penalty incident awarded to Liverpool many many times and whether the defender made any contact with Gerrard is still inconclusive, which means that it was a very soft penalty to award. Liverpool can consider themselves very lucky on this occasion. GBH had to be committed before I gave one ffs!

West Ham v Charlton

Traore's sending off was unfortunate as the first yellow card looked a mistake as Traore appeared to make a well timed challenge on his opponent. Why he was booked for this I really don't know but the usual retort is "from my angle.......etc, etc" which is fair enough but hard on the player in this instance.

We guarantee this bet

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.

Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.

That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.

The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
