Graham Frankland is the ComeOnBoro.com man in the black - I said MAN in the black - and is here to answer your questions and settle your arguments.
If you have a question for the ref, just fill out the form at the bottom of this article or email us here.
Question one from Jim Merritt
A fan blows a whistle and causes a defender to pick the ball up in his own area mistaking it for the ref's whistle. What does the ref do?
a) Award a penalty to the opposition.
b) Restart the game with a drop ball.
c) Award an indirect free-kick.
Thank You.
Thanks for that Jim. I must say that I have never encountered this situation in my career but the answer to the question is (b), in that you would restart the game with a drop ball. The reason for this is that the whistler is considered to be an outside interference on the field of play in the same way that a supporter or a dog would be considered if they were to run on to the pitch and interfere with the game.
Question two from Sean Cooch
Simple one, can a player remove the corner flag to take a corner? Oh by the way - this at mini-soccer level.
Cheers, Sean
Certainly in the eleven a side game the answer is a resounding NO - he cannot remove it as it is considered to be a statutory part of the field of play. If the laws of mini soccer are the same in respect of the field of play then I am sure that the answer would be the same as given.
Question three from Mike Sell
Graham,
What is the exact definition of the rule when a player is injured. Previously the player was treated and returned on or near the half way line. Watching Newcastle recently, Uriah Rennie wouldn't let Parker back on the field even though the ball was out of play prior to a corner kick (CK). The CK was taken and then was cleared for another CK. Rennie then allowed Parker to return from a position behind the goal? Can you clarify?
Thanks
Mike
Mike, the Laws of the Game in this regard are quite basic in that it simply says that after leaving the field of play due to injury a player can only return if he receives a signal from the Referee to do so AND the game has been restarted after the stoppage for his injury. However we were given guidelines which also said that:
a) he should only return at some point on the touchline and NOT the goal line and
b) he should not be allowed to return if he IMMEDIATELY was in a position to influence the play ie. a player has broken away down the wing with a clear run on goal and the injured player suddenly appears from off the pitch to make a tackle.
If these guidelines were used by Mr Rennie then clearly he was wrong to let him re enter the field of play from behind the goal.
Question four from James Quinlan
Can a defensive wall stand with their hands above their heads? This would stop the free kick from going over the wall but would count as ball to hand as their arms were raised before the freekick is taken.
The decision to penalise for a handball is down to one thing only... was it deliberate? In the case you have outlined my answer would be yes. Why else would their hands be above their heads if it was not to stop the ball? Airing their armpits on a hot sunny day is not an acceptable excuse!
Question five from Antoniou Kostas
Hi, I am from other country but you do a great job there. I want to ask this thing - if a player that takes a penalty tries to protect the ball with his body so a teammate can shot it to score where the ball come back after the penalty only hitting the crossbar, is this legal? Or is it an indirect free kick for impeding a defender to play the ball?
I ask this because he has no right to touch the ball a second time before someone else do it. I ask this because a player can protect the ball with his body if he plays it, but in this situation he can't play the ball.
I'm not sure what country you come from Antoniou but you are watching some crazy game wherever it is!! Having read your question a couple of times to try and understand the situation you are highlighting I would have to say that the player should be penalised for impeding (it used to be obstructing) an opponent. The ball has always got to be be within playing distance of a player "shielding" it but as you rightly point out he is not allowed to play it a second time after it has come back off the crossbar so he will have no argument when he is penalised for the offence of impeding an opponent.
Thanks for those questions gents. I hope I have answered them to your satisfaction and until the next time.
Enjoy your football.

We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for four seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
