STEWART DOWNING SIGNS FIVE YEAR CONTRACT

It has been announced that England winger Stewart Downing has signed a five year contract at Middlesbrough.

Downing had two and a half years to run on his current deal but has now signed up until the summer of 2013.

This will quash further transfer speculation after last month's rumours surrounding a proposed move to Spurs.

The signing follows on from comments made by Boro chief executive Keith Lamb at Tuesday's BBC Fans' Forum. There, Lamb stated that he believed that the Downing contract situation would be resolved within six weeks.

His signing will be seen as a boost for Gareth Southgate's side, who aim to build on a solid run of results that has seen them reach twelfth place in the Premier League and the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Downing has been talismatic for the Teesside side over the last three seasons and he has made over 170 appearances for his hometown club.
