SIR BOBBY'S BIG GOAL - LET'S TACKLE CANCER
Sir Bobby Robson has got the better of many football opponents during his distinguished career and now he has set himself a major new goal - to fight cancer.
Currently battling the disease himself for a fifth time, the 75-year-old former England and Newcastle United manager knows the benefits of early detection and quality care. He is now launching a new charitable foundation to ensure the quarter of a million people in the UK who are diagnosed with cancer this year are as lucky as he has been.
Launching this week The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will initially focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and will also help support clinical trials of promising new treatments to tackle the disease. Its first goal is to raise the money urgently required to set up The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the new Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
The money raised will fund dedicated research facilities including a 12 bed unit with treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art laboratory and consulting facilities, all of which is being constructed by the NHS Trust at the Freemann Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Sir Bobby first discovered there was a local opportunity to contribute to the fight against cancer when Dr Ruth Plummer, the oncologist currently treating him, asked for potential contacts that could help her raise money to equip the new Cancer Trials Research Centre.
Sir Bobby says: "Ruth has helped save my life so when she asked me to help out in such a small way I couldn't possibly refuse her. My wife and I agreed that we should do much more than just supply contact names and decided to launch the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
"I've fought cancer for 15 years and have been lucky to be diagnosed early and to have received quality care. Thanks to the help I've had I'm still around today so I want to give my full support to the experts working to beat this disease.
"Being born and bred in the North East I also want to do something which will benefit the people of this region. Of course if, and when, the clinical drug trials are successful then the positive impact will be much wider than that!"
Many of the doctors and nurses working in the new Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre will be funded by Cancer Research UK. They already help to ensure that local people have access to the latest cancer treatments by working in partnership with Cancer Research UK scientists at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University.
This collaborative approach means that new treatments can be taken from design in the laboratory right through to evaluation in the clinic, allowing promising new treatments to reach patients quickly.
Dr Ruth Plummer, whose research is funded by Cancer Research UK, said: "We are extremely grateful to Sir Bobby for his commitment to supporting research which will benefit cancer patients in the North East"
Once the Foundation has raised sufficient funds to set up the Centre, all additional money will go towards cancer related projects in the North East.
