FOOTBALL FANS LEND THEIR SUPPORT TO SIR BOBBY ROBSON

Football fans from the North East and as far away as Singapore and Florida have been digging deep to help raise funds for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, bringing the current total to more than £260,000.

The fund has also been swelled by corporate donations from the region’s generous business community as well as personal donations from some of Sir Bobby’s friends in and outside football.

Fans of Ipswich Town, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion football clubs, just three of Sir Bobby’s former clubs, have contributed while traditional local rivalries between the region’s three Premiership teams have been suspended in respect of this important cause.

In addition to official support from Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Newcastle football clubs, unofficial club fanzines on Teesside, Wearside and Tyneside are supporting the Foundation and many fans who have given money via the internet have taken the opportunity to wish Sir Bobby well in his own personal battle with the disease.

Sir Bobby says: “Every day I am amazed in some new way by the generosity of people helping me raise money both here in the North East and further afield. The donations we’ve had from supporters of my former clubs like Newcastle United mean a lot to me but the pain caused by cancer touches us all at some point no matter who we are or which club we follow.

“I know very well that fans in the North East are incredibly passionate about their own team and have long memories about who used to manage who. So it makes me especially proud to see the money coming in from all over the region as we all pull together to help the experts beat this disease. It may be just a short ceasefire as the end of the season approaches though!”

A number of fundraising events are planned on behalf of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Peacock Financial Management is currently organising The Sir Bobby Robson Golf Day at Matfen Hall on the 13th June and is looking for an event sponsor and individual sponsors for each hole. Sir Bobby is putting his own money, time and energy into the charitable foundation which will initially focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and will also help support clinical trials of promising new treatments to tackle the disease. Its first goal is to raise the money urgently required to set up The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the new Northern Centre for Cancer Care.

The money raised will fund dedicated research facilities including a twelve bed unit with treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art laboratory and consulting facilities, all of which is being constructed by the NHS Trust at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Many of the doctors and nurses working in the new Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre will be funded by Cancer Research UK. They already help to ensure that local people have access to the latest cancer treatments by working in partnership with Cancer Research UK scientists at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University.

This collaborative approach means that new treatments can be taken from design in the laboratory right through to evaluation in the clinic, allowing promising new treatments to reach patients quickly.

Once the Foundation has raised sufficient funds to set up the Centre, all additional money will go towards cancer related projects in the North East.
