VILLAIN OF
THE WEEK 24-9-08
Peter Owen
Welcome to Villain of the Week - the most upfront feature the face of football has ever eyed. It promotes honesty and relegates villains - and has no match.
Let's move straight on to this week's nominations:
Game: West Ham v Newcastle, Player: Lucas Neill of West Ham
You are not allowed to come sliding in with studs showing and on another day your tackle on Michael Owen may have caused serious injury.
Game: Bolton v Arsenal, Player: Kevin Davies of Bolton
You love to leave your mark on players when things turn sour, as Clichy felt.
Game: Chelsea v Manchester United, Player: Wayne Rooney of Manchester United
You are not allowed to lunge in as you did on Cole and there is a fine line at times between yellow and red.
Game: Chelsea v Manchester United, Player: Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United
Keep your gob shut and Respect the ref or more yellow cards will do it for you.
Game: Chelsea v Manchester United, Player: Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United
You encourage the ref to book a fellow player, which is a despicable act, but the ref soon dived into his pocket to show you a yellow.
Game: Watford v Reading, Referee: Stuart Atwell
You are finished after that circus...
And so over to the panel...
Steve Goldby
It wasn't Stuart Atwell's fault in the Watford v Reading game, it was linesman Nigel Bannister's. You should have gone to Specsavers mate!
Here's a song for you...
Jeff Winter
Interesting nominations!!
Lucas Neill and Kevin Davies are well known for their tackles, not that it makes them any the less dangerous.
My nomination would actually have been for Mark "Jessie" Lawrenson who saw nothing wrong with the Davies tackle.
Manchester United, with thirteen yellows and a red in their last two games, are being gallantly led by their captain and are championing the cause of the "Respect" campaign.
I cannot in a million years understand why Stuart Atwell has been nominated. It was his assistant Nigel Bannister who said the ball had crossed the line.
So the winner once again is our old favourite Manchester United's
Cristiano Ronaldo, whose dive to get an opponent booked just proved that you never lose it! Once a cheat always a cheat.
Peter’s analysis
This feature is the only one kicking about in football that has no match or substitute.
Plus it even has an honesty award to boot if someone comes up smelling of roses.
I listened to Mark Lawrenson talking out of his arse on Saturday and knew Jeff Winter would bring the hammer down on him. Therefore, on the back of our expert panellists' every word, let’s look back over the weekend’s villains, including Lawrenson!
Lucas Neill of West Ham wants to count himself very fortunate that Michael Owen didn't make a meal out of his lingering tackle. All it takes is to be slightly off course with such a challenge and the colour of the card can also be damaging.
Kevin Davies of Bolton showed a side to his game which is very familiar when things turn pear shaped. Clichy was almost static when Davies stampeded in and he made completely certain that both his legs ended up around Clichy to maximise the impact.
Davies suffers from a condition called failed strikers’ syndrome and Mark Lawrenson is to refereeing what a poker is to a gas fire by suggesting it was one of those good old fashioned tackles.
Wayne Rooney of Manchester United picks up far too many unnecessary yellow cards and his stupid lunge on Cole was both silly and needless.
Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United has more mouth than talent and ref Mike Riley is having none of it this season and making certain his cards are his only voice.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United is a sniper who will stoop to any lengths to cheat the beautiful game. Jeff Winter has pointed out the disciplinary record of Manchester United in the last two weeks and there is no way of disguising all the cards they have collected.
Jeff’s comments about referee Atwell are mine to both take on board and address, because I beg to differ and offer my own humble opinion.
It doesn’t matter if Atwell’s assistant saw Lord Lucan romping home on Shergar at Redcar races first and foremost. Ref Atwell was on the pitch, not down the M4, and the ball was three yards from the goal.
Only a tailor’s dummy could honestly lose sight of play as Atwell did and an alert ref would have put his assistant right.
Steve Goldby, our other expert panellist, has managed to find a blinding piece of music which is a must listen and it could have been called the Portsmouth Overture.
Whilst I’m on the subject of referees, I’m not overly keen on Steve Tanner’s game.
Mark Lawrenson’s comments on the Steven Gerrard disallowed goal from the free kick were also offside, but my three points below show why the referee was spot on.
1) He made certain he was well to the right of Gerrard and away from all obstruction.
2) He made certain he was placed to oversee any mishaps whatsoever in the box.
3) He made certain he had full eye contact with his assistant at all times... Bingo!
Having watched Manchester City I would like to say this.
Mr Bean would have scored six goals against Portsmouth. It was also the very first time on camera that Hughes didn't blame a ref which was pleasing, but things will change once someone tramples all over his sand-castles.
I was trying to work out the true definition of a bastard the other day and it suddenly stepped out in front of me. It’s got to be a referee who has a day job as a traffic warden - they must have balls like elephant droppings.
Thanks to both Jeff and Steve, our expert panellists, for their expertise and my casting vote for our “Villain of the Week” appoints Ronaldo. Atwell must also face the music.
Finally
Pogatetz’s challenge on Possebon in the Carling Cup leaves him standing knee-deep in shame. Those are the colours of this feature and let’s hope the lad recovers from injury. It was everything but a good old fashioned tackle.

Here's how it's done. Just follow these simple instructions.
1. Open an account with Sky Bet .
Open an account with Betfair . It is really important that you enter the promotional code of FTB125 when prompted. This is to ensure that you receive your bonus.

You have temporarily laid out a total of £111.00 on the Manchester City v Arsenal match. I stress, temporarily... Now sit back, crack a beer open and enjoy the match.
4. Here's what happens at the end of the game. All winnings are paid out on the ninety minute result.
If Arsenal win, you collect £154.60. That's £129.60 from Sky Bet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
If it's a draw, you collect £156.86. That's £131.86 from Betfair plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
If Manchester City win you collect £155.00. That's £130.00 from Extrabet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Manchester City v Arsenal match is Arsenal win and you make £43.60 profit. However, if Manchester City win you make £44.00 and if it's a draw win you make £45.86. That's a minimum profit of 39%, a much better rate of interest that you would get at any high street bank or building society.
6. It is absolutely vital that you click on the links on this page to open the accounts with the three bookies and enter the correct bonus codes or you may not qualify for the bonuses.
Also, before you place your bets, you should check that the odds haven't changed. If they have, let us know by mail or phone us on 01642 223229 and we will rework the bet for you.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
