VILLAIN OF
THE WEEK 1-10-08
Peter Owen
Welcome to Villain of the Week - the most upfront feature the face of football has ever eyed. It promotes honesty and relegates villains - and has no match.
Let's move straight on to this week's nominations:
Game: Everton v Liverpool, Player: Tim Cahill of Everton
You raised your hand to the face of Arbeloa during an earlier incident
and perhaps your wild tackle on Alonso said a lot more.
Game: Fulham v West Ham, Player: Andy Johnson of Fulham
You brought your boot into the shins of both Llunga and Neill and almost asked to be sent off.
Game: Boro v West Brom, Player: Justin Hoyte of Boro
You were fouled inside the box but a competent ref would look away
from any player who exaggerated the incident, as you firmly did.
Game: Wigan v Man City, Player: Wilson Palacios of Wigan
You were fouled inside the box and took off like a helium balloon.
Referee Steve Bennett had a garbage game, never mind the penalty.
Game: Newcastle v Blackburn, Player: Martin Olsson of Blackburn
You almost caught the ball above your head but if you had just been a
touch higher, you may have caught that sad magpie which passed over.
Game: Man Utd v Bolton, Player: Cristiano Ronaldo of Man Utd
You dived yet again and Rob Styles showed us his wings and colours.
Game: Portsmouth v Spurs, Player: Lassana Diarra of Portsmouth
I saw nothing seriously wrong with the tackle which earned him the red card.
And so over to this week's expert panellists...
Steve Goldby
I have to go for Ronaldo. It's a shame though because I have been sticking up for him during the last few months by saying that he no longer dives and cheats.
It seems a leopard really can't change his spots though.
So Ronaldo, you get my nomination this week, plus a song dedicated
especially to you.
Jeff Winter
In the main I agree with the nominations from this weekend.
There certainly was plenty to talk about. The bad tackles that have crept back into the game were evident, as was the diving around the box, exaggerated falls, handballs galore and refereeing howlers.
I did not have a problem with Diarra being sent off though.
Cahill might have erred previously but his sending off probably looked worse than it was.
Ronaldo is so good at drawing a challenge then going to ground. He should be, he gets enough practice at it!!
My winner this week though was Andy Johnson. Better known for going to
ground himself, his cowardly studs up challenge should have been a straight red.
Peter’s analysis
This feature is the only one kicking about in football that has no match or substitute!
Our expert panellists thought I had lost sight of one particular incident last week and a visit to Specsavers was even suggested. That truly emphasises the bridge that can form between opinions and this week is the hottest on record.
Therefore, on the back of our expert panellists every word, it’s time to blow the whistle on the weekend and also hand out our new cabbage award.
Tim Cahill of Everton has lost his appeal against his sending off and will now serve a three match ban. However, he raised his hand to an opponent’s face in that game and was very fortunate to have gotten away with it.
Andy Johnson of Fulham followed through with his boot on two separate occasions and could have broken the shin bones of both players. He could have so easily been shown a straight red for either of the offences and what defence could he plead?
Martin Olsson of Blackburn looked as though he was reaching for the clouds when he handled the ball inside the box and referee Steve Tanner operates with his head in the clouds so surely they should have seen each other.
Whoever buys Newcastle will need lots of muscle but the way things are shaping up money wise, it looks like Mike Ashley may have to use the local Ad Mag to get rid.
I said at the start of last season that Jeff Winter would have a mountain of decisions to clear up but this season will become an Everest inside a grow bag as penalties seem to be the root of all evil.
This feature determines only whether penalty incidents were exaggerated or whether a dive was involved (or any other misdemeanour) and no more.
Robbie Keane was denied a penalty last season because he chose to exaggerate it beyond all belief and its scales did not balance up. However, some refs seem to go for theatre acts and some refs watch the floor and look well away.
I think that explains the weekend issues befittingly!
The standards of refereeing in the Premiership barring a few super-troopers is the worst I have ever known and when something becomes embarrassing, it becomes serious.
Ronaldo has dived so many times he should be shaped like an arch as the FA have not made one single approach to straighten him up.
However, this week Rob Styles is the real villain and he needs his mask taking off because he stood by and allowed a cheat to scar the face of the beautiful game.
He stood by and allowed the Bolton team and their fans to be cheated. Don't try and cover your tracks because you are a referee who either seeks to keep the customer satisfied or sees himself as the matador commanding the ring.
My assessment of you as a ref is 5/10 and you’ve been awarded our first cabbage!
The way referee Steve Bennett handled the Wigan v Man City game was absolutely shocking and my assessment of you as a ref is also 5/10.
Unless these assessors have the calibre, expertise and truthfulness of a Jeff Winter, they are just a waste of space and would be better off filling in a bingo card.
Both Styles and Bennett keep very little eye contact with their assistants and it stands out in their decision making - like a sore thumb at times.
Our expert panellists are split over their choice of our “Villain of the Week”. Therefore, I am diving in with my casting vote on a player who said these words; ”I try to do my job and I try to play honestly”.
Steve Goldby has found another blistering piece of music to cement Ronaldo’s return and you will luv it... honestly you will luv it.
Thanks to both Jeff and Steve for their scoring comments. The feature is starting to warm up and the above are only my opinions. So if you wish to offer your opinions, then please do and we will publish them next week.
Finally, the way to straighten that Portuguese submarine is a straight red card and if the Manchester bagpipes sound off, a trip to the stands will soon switch off that music.

4. Here's what happens at the end of the game. All winnings are paid out on the ninety minute result.
If Standard Liege win, you collect £149.87. That's £124.87 from Sky Bet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
If Sampdoria win, you collect £149.64. That's £124.64 from Betfair plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
If it's a draw you collect £151.50. That's £126.50 from Extrabet plus a £25.00 cashback from Betfair .
5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Standard Liege v Sampdoria match is Sampdoria win and you make £45.64 profit. However, if Standard Liege win you make £45.87 profit and if it's a draw you make £47.50. That's a minimum profit of over 43%, a much better rate of interest that you would get at any high street bank or building society.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the 2006 World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
We guarantee this bet
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that this is the fifth season that we have been publishing arbitrage bets and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Only twice has our refund guarantee been triggered and that was when we did all the figures wrong and sent refunds out to those who had followed our advice and made a small loss.
Our refund guarantee works like this. If this bet doesn't work like we say it will and you end up out of pocket, we will refund your losses. Simple as that.
That means that you simply cannot lose on this, whatever happens and even if we messed up the numbers.
The only stipulation here is that you must click on the links on this page to be eligible for the refund guarantee, not that you'll be needing to claim anyway. Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
